On November 26, 2008, when Mumbai was attacked, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan met his end rescuing hostages from the Taj Mahal Hotel. He led the commando operation that succeeded in flushing out the terrorists and rescuing 14 hostages.
After his colleague Commando Sunil Yadav was injured in the operation, Major Unnikrishnan arranged for his evacuation and continued in pursuit of the terrorists. He was fatally shot being an officer in the Indian Army serving with the Special Action Group of National Security Guards (NSG). Unnikrishnan is the posthumous recipient of the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award. A road in Bangalore is named after him.
